I'm not sure what the dictionary defines as broody but i think it's an over whelming urge to settle down but not nessecerly have children. I went through a broody phase as my partner calls it when my life was out of control with no routine. I wanted stability. If its children you want it could be one of two things. 1) you want to have children with your other half, or 2) if there is no other half that's what you want not the kids. Its the biological clock ticking.

Broody is kind of like intensely thoughtful, or darkly introspective.
Easy way to understand what brooding is: Refer to the TV series Angel. The series made persistent jokes about Angel's brooding nature. Instead of going out and having fun, he instead chose to sit at home and reflect over situations and life, often in a dark room. He was broody.

It comes from the time when people kept chickens at home. A "broody" hen" was a good egg layer and/or she was hatching a clutch of chicks and it was so near the time that they would hatch that the hen would not leave the nest.
Pregnant women or dogs or cats(pick an animal) who are near the time of birth who start cleaning and fixing a spot to put the babies are said to be "broody."

It means that every time you have sex with your loved one, you can't help but stop thinking about kids, what they would look like, what you would name them, boy or girl! What it would mean to the rest of your life. Being totally broody would tell you that no matter what labour pains, constipation, vieny legs, swoolen everything else - you want it, you want to create that extra person on the earth and you can behold nothing but good and happiness for them! sure they do, unfortunately most times it happens with no forethought and 50% of the time with the wrong person. tho childless, i have thought often of being one, but the right person either did not agree or i was with someone who i knew would not complete the set. sad to say, cause i am a successful self made person in almost all endeavors except parenting and feel that i would add to the enrichment of the planet, if only a little. at a certain point men tho able to conceive are no longer compatible or attractive to or toward a woman who can be a mother without danger
