Decrees from nobles. I think a foot was the size of a particular king's foot, etc. Similar with Stones, etc. I think.

The only true measurement would be a unit that was an exact fraction of the Earth's circumference. That measurement is called the "Cubit" and is the measurement used in the bible when Noah built the Ark.

There are two "Cubit's" the Royal Cubit and the Profane Cubit. The Royal Cubit was used by the Egyptians for building pyramids and other royal structures. The Profane Cubit was used for building everything else.

its pretty crazy. my science teacher last year wouldnt quit bitchin about it.

an inch is the length of three barley corns.
a foot is the length of a foot.
a yard was the width of king henry the eighths gut. (no joke!)
a mile is the length of, like, 2000 paces (not a normal stride) of a roman centurion...or somethin like that.
