Let's see...well you still can express individuality with uniforms. It's not based on looks it's based on personality. I'm not saying we should wear uniforms but it's true what your dad says. It would be best to wear uniforms so kids don't think higher of others. I know some kids can't afford to go and buy new clothes that are in style as much as some other kids do. And if everyone wear uniforms there's not that much judging about what brands or clothes we wear. I think it'd make us smarter too because kids wouldn't have to worry about kind of clothes to buy and focus more on school. Also students can always wear whatever they want after school. So it all works out. Plus I don't think uniforms are that bad anyways that's all i have to say.

Well I went to a Christian school, and we had to wear uniforms, and of course they are not that attractive, but that was the whole point. They didn't want kids coming in suggestive attire, and even though not all kids would, they have to take an attitude of assumption, and assume that everyone would. It also cuts out discrimination, no one is walking around telling this student you can wear this, and to another you can't wear this. In the beginning I hated wearing a uniform, and I never learned to love it but I did come to understand the reason for it.
Outside of school, uniforms can be a very important thing. They unify people, hinting the name. They help you know who your friends are, and more so who your enemies are. They're not always such a bad thing after all.
You can either look at uniforms as conformity, or unity.

You know, I've always been torn on this topic. I do like the idea of uniforms for a few reasons. One, people spend so much time worrying about what to wear, and what other people are gonna think. Uniforms can reduce the anxiety levels. And are also easier on the parent's back to school budget. Also consider this, have you ever seen a teacher judge a person based on their clothing? Make assumptions on what kind of a student they will be just by looking at them? This way each student would have a fair chance. it is sad but people do get an automatic judement based on their clothing, fare or not fare. But yes, uniforms cut down on a person's individuality. And I would not have liked it if our school had gone to uniforms. But.. I do see the advantages. If you know what I mean lol.

my nearly 12 year old went to an elementary school that required uniforms. uniforms even a lot out. you can't tell that some kids have hand-me-downs and some kids have the outfit from a pricey catalog. even the sneakers had to follow the uniform policy. it made getting dressed in the mornings easier and the wear and tear on his other clothes was minimal. he has just started 6th grade and moved up to the middle school. he wants all this in style stuff. most of it is expensive. laundry day has gotten longer because there is more to do. he goes to a school that has a pretty equal mix of white, black, mexican and a few other nationalities. the mix is fairly even between "rich" kids and "poor" kids too but seeing the kids in regualr clothes vs. the uniform, you can really see the differences more in regular clothes. so... i agree with your dad. express your individuality in other ways. sports, year book, etc...

Because of the disparity, every school should have plain, drab, uniforms with No style. This is because kids base popularity upon cost of clothes more than on individual wearing them. Learning has suffered to the point that every country in the world offers a better education than the U.S.. Teachers, office people, librarian, school board members, etc must also wear them. Give everyone from top to bottom an equal footing and you will find incentive to do the job. We all are crying for more teacher pay, but this needs to be based upon work performance.

My personal opinion is the only opinion clothing shows: (1) you have no taste; (2) your family has very little money; (3) your family has too much money; and (4) you think your clothes express your "individuality" and what your opinions are. To me, individuality is how you look at another person, how you speak to another person, what respect you give to another person. Because of commercial advertising, movies, t.v. programs, sometimes we think if you spend a fortune on clothes gives you "individuality". Will uniforms help? I think yes to a certain extent. At least then you would be an individual if you pinned a big bird on your boob.

I was a poor kid who had one change of clothes (literally). I wanted more than one pair of underwear. I didn't care if it said "Tommy" on it or not.
Did kids make fun of me? Oh, yes, unmercifully. Would they have made fun of me in a uniform? Oh, yes, no doubt.
A better way would be to teach kids tolerance. Much harder to do than just sticking a kid in a blue plaid jumper and white shirt.
How about this? You get to wear the clothes you want to do community service of any sort. Not only will you be expressing your individuality, which is a lot of fun, but you'll be helping to build tolerance in your community by helping others no matter what their circumstances.

I went to schcools where you could wear what you want, and schools that you had to wear a uniform. Uniforms are better. Makes it easier to pick your clothes out in the morning. Express yourself when you go out w/your friends.
