Okay, this may be generic advice but I'll say it anyway:

Write the book first. write it about something you care about, and worry about other stuff later. Then, once it's written, edit, get feedback, and EDIT EDIT EDIT. Publishers are really backed up these days and won't want to do any editing. Also, make sure that you have a concept that has a specific market to make things easier.

Then copyright it. Then network. Get an agent ( a must). Not an easy task, but you have to try. Send it everywhere. Be persistent!Once you have an agent, you're part way there.

If you are trying to write a book just to make money, I wouldn't. Because writing should flow and not be forced. When writing for money there is a good chance you'll end up with writers block because the whole financial aspect will be there in the back of the mind. So I would suggest try copy writing at the start and write the book on the side, this way you can take you time and your creative expression should be better. Which will increase your chances of getting published.

First write the book. If you are planning to self-publish you will need to have it written, edited and printed because you can start to distribute it. The distribution part is the hard part so you may want to find out how to get press releases to get the book out there on people's minds. There are alot of writers out there making alot of money but first books rarely do well. Depending on your subject content you may be able to have a business promote the book for you. Let's say you are writing about birds as pets. See if Petsmart or local pet stores will distribute flyers for you. Get your book written and copyrighted and then we can talk about marketing it.
