Which martial arts form would you recommend for a beginning preschooler? I am more interested in self-dicipline and exercise first, then self-defense. Thank you.

I would agree with the first answer - Tai Kwon Do. Any martial art is good, but you need to observe a class or two to see how the instructors interact with the kids. Tae Kwon Do takes advantage of a child's natural flexibility by using some real awesome kicks. The classes are very regimented, and they have the kids recite the rules of the dojo (training gym) before every class, although any good Instructor demands respect - for the art, the dojo, the self, and others. It has good moves for self defense, but I look at it as a sport. Other martial arts are much more effective for realistic self defense. I prefer Ju Jitsu and Karate.

Aikido.

Japanese art of self-defense. It employs locks and holds and utilizes the principle of nonresistance to cause an opponent's own momentum to work against him or her. Aikido emphasizes the importance of achieving complete mental calm and control of one's own body to master an opponent's attack. There are no offensive moves. It traces its origins to Japanese martial (samurai) traditions dating to the 14th century, and it was developed as a modern form in the early 20th century by Ueshiba Morihei.
