Bread crumbs
They love oranges and lemons. Float a slice in the water, it will make a mess though.
Lettuce, any vegetables.
Do any of your neighbors or friends have fish? Can you "borrow" some fish food until it dies?
Really, it's only a dollar or 2 at Walmart. Why did you let her play that game if you didn't want her to have it?
You can painlessly kill it by "accidentally" dropping 2 Alka seltzer into its water. Use 2 for every cup of water. They dissolve completely so no incriminating evidence.

Yes, if you are not willing to buy a can of goldfish food at the pet store which is not very expensive, then you should not be a goldfish owner. Please find it a good home. I must add that the fish will not survive long in the small bowl the fish probably came in. Fish really do better in tanks with filters. If you really want to be responsible (and teach your child about responsibility and properly caring for God's creatures) you should buy at least a small tank setup though I will go out on a limb and say it should be at least a ten gallon setup for one goldfish. However, if you are not willing to buy a can of food I suppose there is no hope of an aquarium purchase. Again, try to find a good home for it.
As an aside, I think live animals as prizes is an unethical practice and should not be allowed.

If you get a goldfish you have to be prepared to take care of it. That means feeding it, cleaning its tank out regurlarly, and much more. If you aren't willing to do that than you shouldn't have a fish. Even if you won it at a fair you still made the choice to take it. As for food, goldfish flakes are cheap and easy to find, just feed 2-3 times daily, no more than the fish can eat in 1-2 minutes. Careful not to overfeed, goldfish can get very messy.
Even something that seems simple like a fish is a big responsibility. While goldfish are probably the easiest fish to take care of, they will not live full and happy lives unless taken care of properly. If you don't think you're ready for this, then you'd best give the fish to someone who is.
Good luck, hope you enjoy your new underwater friend. :)

Okay... first of all, I reiterate what the other people who answered before me said. If you don't want to buy a $2 can of goldfish food, give the fish to somebody who will!
Now, for the important part. Goldfish are foragers. That means that you can feed your fish flaked or pelleted goldfish food, aquatic plants and green, leafy vegetables, small amounts of squash, blood worms (mosquito larvae) and other live and frozen fish foods. Goldfish are cold water fish, so if you live in a very warm house, you might wind up needing to get a cooling system for your tank. Furthermore, when properly kept, they have a lifespan of twenty years and require a minimum of fifteen gallons of water per fish. Keeping them in very small tanks will shorten their lifespans to a year or two and cause them to die an EXTREMELY painful death, if they aren't killed beforehand. When kept properly, goldfish are super-easy pets, but when kept in improper conditions, they are very susceptible to disease and ammonia poisoning, since they produce so much waste. I recommend that you keep your daughter's fish in a proper tank or you give it away, because it will not be fun explaining to her exactly why her fish died.
If you're willing to put in the money, research and time required to care for a goldfish, your daughter has just won herself a childhood companion. When I was a very young girl, I won myself a goldfish. My parents researched it after making every classic mistake in goldfish care, and as a result, it lived until I left for college. If your daughter likes animals, I recommend that you commit yourself to caring for the goldfish for its full lifespan... she WILL thank you in years to come.

they sell at any walmart.. a little can of gold fish flakes... they like that stuff.. but remember only feed them once a day and just a small pinch for each fish cause if you feel too much then it will make the water cloudy and can cause ammonia build up in the water... and that will kill any fish very fast! They might act like they are hungry all the time but feeding them once a day a pinch of fish flakes is plenty!
hope this is helpful!
congrats on winning the gold fish...they are lots of fun to watch!

Goldfish food will hardly break the bank! If you don't want to care for the fish, give it away to someone who will!

just fish pellets or flakes. but those fair fishes don't usually last long for some reason. if you didn't buy the fish flakes or pellets and still can't then I suggest light bread crumbs.

Fish food -- very cheap at any walmart or drugstore. Don't give more than a few flakes at a time, though!
