in other words, i am talking about those who you've seen in numerous films and who get, like say minor roles, or appear in non-traditional hollywood films. the not so A-list celebs that not everyone has heard of. so that excludes people like tom cruise, orlando bloom, nicole kidman for example. what films do you enjoy that they have starred in and, if you can what is it about their performances that makes them stand out from the rest?

Lucy Lawless is actually one of the most talented actresses to ever appear on screen. Many people dont know this, and/or dismiss her most noted role [Xena] but I think one'd be pleasantly surprised if they ever took the time to really watch her work. She's amazing. She expresses feelings so wonderfully without words-- she really is an emotion-evoking actress. When she plays Xena [among other chacters] she completely abandons her natural Kiwi accent. (Thats New Zealand if you dont know). I dig the voice she uses for Xena; its deep and chilling, and very unique.

What I like most about her portrayal of Xena is that the character is very androgynous in personality (if that makes any sense) and she definetely does not fit the stereotypical "tough" female we're so used to see these days. No sexy walks; no swing of the hips, no bland one-liners, no cliche's. (Thats the primary reason why female hero movies fail today, because they focus too much on image/sex appeal and not substance). She is good looking, but that doesnt take centerstage or the focus; the character development does. I remember Lucy Lawless had asked for the writers to allow Xena to do whatever they'd let a man do (or say).

I've never seen a female actress portray such power, command, rage, anger and fury the way she does. But the coolest part though, is Lucy's personality is nothing like Xena in real life (which really freaks me out how completely different she is lol). Its always a treat to watch her go in and out of character during the dalies. She's equally as good with drama as she is with comedy. I wish her many sucess on her recent roles, and she's doing really well already with Battlestar Galatica as a cylon.

Other actresses I like who are under-rated are Angela Bassett, Charlize Theron and Jodie Foster. Any actress who isnt afraid to not look "hot" in a role or do "un-feminine" tasks is cool to me.

Robert Sean Leonard in Dead Poets Society was extraordinary (so were Ethan Hawke and Robin Williams- in fact , everyone, of course) but he hasn't been in much since.

I was pleased to see that Chris Cooper has got recognition ever since I first saw him in American Beauty so he's not under-rated now.

People (though not Oscar voters) have started to acknowledge that Jim Carrey is not only very funny and inventive but he can also do understatement too. (like Robin Williams). I know he's A-list now (he has come so far) but I had to mention him. Eugene Levy and Seann William Scott from American Pie!

I would say Cher regardless of how you see her music career the woman can act. I mean just look at Mask and Mermaids top performance. Oh and also Whoopi Goldberg she is so versatile: The Colour Purple, Fatal Beauty and The Long Walk Home.

James "Jim" Caviezel comes to my mind.
The first time I saw him was in "Frequency" and I thought he did an outstanding job. He carried movie very well even though he was an unknown.
He seems to take on roles that most of the mainstream actors don't bother with or are not equipped to take on.
His portrayal of Jesus in "the Passions of the Christ" was amazing. I can't imagine anyone else in that role.

Britney Murphy.

Because she likes offbeat roles she hasn't taken a central spotlight in hollywood yet. But her acting is awesome.

Steve Buscemi.

Is something of a character actor for the geeky slacker/loser. But his acting is good enough to place him in other roles. Sadly, it is also his gawky looks that is keeping him away from central roles that he is otherwise fit for. But he IS very funny. Any movie with him in it is bound to be humorous.

Neve McIntosh.
She's only been in about three films (not counting bit-parts) - the best one being "Gypsy Woman" - but she's best appreciated in television programmes:-
"Bodies" (the second series, at any rate); the `playing for the ashes' episode of "Inspector Lynley"; the Richard E Grant version of "Hound of the Baskervilles" and the 2001 ITV adaptation of "Lady Audley's Secret".
