Of course you can change it yourslef, and you will save a bundle.
There are three main types of watch case.
The easiest to work on are secured by a few small screws. These are found in some sport rubber watches for brands such as Casio.
The 2nd easiest is the screwback, where you have to turn the back casing, usually anticlockwise to open. These type of casing have grooves/notches around the outer rim of the case, usually 6 notches. It is easy if you have a tool to catch the notches. else a pair of pliers will do fine.
The 3rd type is the snaptight casing. They also have a special tool to securely hold and release the back casing for some brands, though not necessary for most of our cheaper watches. Else search for the small groove at the inner side to place the flat type screwdriver and tilt/turn it open. It can be very difficult for the tight ones, resulting in scratches to the case and screwdriver.
Once open, check for any rubber or plastic water seal that you have to place back to maintain waterseal. A little rubber grease may help too.
Watch batteries generally all face the same direction, with the flat +ve side facing you when you open with the watch backcase facing you..
You may have to short certain models of watches to reset when changing batteries, but be careful or you will may your watch if you do wrongly.
Use good quality batteries(eg. branded made in Japan) within the use by date that are of the same size only.

Yes you can do this yourself... but... just about anywhere you buy a watch battery will do it for you at no cost... so....
To open the watch, you need to pry the back off. Some watch backs are screwed on, but most are simply snapped in place. For those that are 'snapped'... there is usually a very small groove at some point around the case back, where you can insert a small screwdriver blade, or butter knife blade, etc... to pry the back off.
Once you have the watch back off... then to get at the battery... again, some batteries are held in place with screws, some have a small plastic 'band' over them, and some simply sit in the space provided for them. If replacing a battery, you need the exact same kind... there will be a letter/number stating the battery model on it, and be sure to put the new one in like the old one....don't get it upside down, heheheh.
Have Fun!

It is quite easy to do so. The back should unscrew and the battery is right there. Most watches have little notches around the edge on the back that you can use to turn it counter clockwise to take it off.
Most jewelers will do it for free with the purchase of a battery from them. Some only charge 5 bucks or less.

depends on the watch but a more "classy" aka expensive watch requires a jeweler because the back is pressurized on to keep it water resistant or water proof. It's cheap to get done though. But do not go to a walmart or Target. Go to a jeweler.

It'll be in the manual - if you don't have one, download a copy from Canon (I've a sneaking suspicion that the holder is in the main battery compartment, but I can't be sure).

You could, but it's not safe for the watch. If you don't close it properly it won't be water resistant anymore...and you damage it. I suggest you go to a jewelry store.

Wal-Mart will do it for free in the jewelry section. You just buy the battery or bring it in your self either way.

If it is water resistant take it somewhere. Otherwise it is quite simple to do yourself.
