DO NOT ATTEMPT !!!!! CALL A PRFESSIONAL. my husband saw a builder cut his arm to the bone trying to this, he was not a garage door installer.

Raise the door fully. Hold it in place with either a vise-grip at a roller or a 2X4 extended at the base. Most all the tension is now released. With a wrench, loosen the set-bolts at the end of the spring that tighten against the rod. Now you're completely relieved of tension. To re-tighten those set-bolts, you'll have to stretch the spring slightly to allow room for the spring to tighten. You can see on the rod where the bolts had been snugged up.

Karen is right. Some garage door springs contain a LOT of energy and when released can be very dangerous.

I agree with the two other answers, DO NOT attempt this if you are not trained in garage doors. This spring has such tension it could kill you. Hire a professional.
