if it is someone you know whether they are a close friend or not, close relative or not...is it rude or is it normal for someone to just show up at my front door and ring the door bell without my knowledge that they are coming? do people usually do this a lot?

Very few people are comfortable with others showing up unannounced. It is almost always a better idea to call first. Even if it's a birthday or special occasion and they just want to drop off a gift.
I would only be comfortable with very close family stopping by unannounced - someone who I wouldn't be embarrassed if they saw me in my PJ's, saw my messy house, and wouldn't be offended if I was in the middle of something and couldn't visit.
I know a couple of people who have the bad habit of dropping in on others unannounced, and it has ruined many good friendships. The people get weirded out and avoid the dropper-inner.

Well I think it's rude. My friends know that if they don't call first and ask if it's ok, if they pop up, I'm liable to open the door, see who it is and then shut the door in their face...That's just me and they know to expect this of me...
Where I grew up, people did this all the time at my parents house and my mom hated it. My dad didn't seem to mind too much since it was always his family that popped up. Sometimes when he wasn't home, my mom made me get really quiet and we would hide until we would hear them drive away...Once, we got caught hiding because my aunt came and looked thru the back windows and saw us crouched by the table.

It's always nice to give fair warning when you're going to stop by some ones house. But there are those times when you really don't PLAN on it, but it happens anyway. Like being in the neighborhood and deciding to stop on a whim.
I always call first to let them know, but once in awhile, I just show up because I didn't know I was gonna do it, either.

Sometimes, but it is a little strange, at least in the American culture. Maybe they feel like you never invite them over so if they just stopped by there would be no way you could say you are too busy or some other excuse why it's a bad time for them to visit.

If you are uncomfortable with it, then it's bad. Some people welcome others who call unannounced, but if you feel put upon when people do it to you, you need to let them know that you expect a call first. There's nothing wrong with feeling that way, and your friends and family should respect that request.

It is rude if Parents or Friend dont know you as close as Almost family.Even so You so you should tell them when u are going to be there.
