I think the number would depend on how you define who was in the attack area. Most people at the Pentagon survived because only one section of the building was directly affected. There may have been thousands of people near the World Trade Center when it was it. Certainly all were affected in some way. Most survived.
Within the towers people on lower floors had more of a chance to escape and many did, but I cannot say how many.
Of course nobody on United 93 survived. I hope this helps some.

I don't think you can quantify the survivors...are those who escaped the buildings survivors? Those who happened to call in sick? Those who were considering going to visit the Towers as tourists that day but woke up a little later? Those who missed their flight or were running late for their job at the Pentagon? I sort of consider all of us survivors because we've had to live through the aftermath together.
It's all so sad. :(

I guess 6 billion people (the population of the earth) minus 3,000.
That's like asking how many people didn't die today?

About 6.5 billion, roughly the entire population of the world, give or take the 2,000 or so that perished in the attacks.

The buildings hold around 50,000 employees, but it was still relatively early, and not all employees were at work, so you could say around 40,000.
