I have two cats, and the best product I've found (for removing urine, at least--I haven't tried it on puke) is the oxi clean carpet cleaner specifically designed for pet stains. It's not that expensive, and it's just in the cleaning section of Walmart or wherever, with the other carpet cleaners. Don't use the pet type of Resolve--I've tried that, and it doesn't do much of anything. But the oxi clean covers the stain well (something about the way the bottle sprays, I guess), and it's easy to use. It really gets the odor out, too. My cats don't pee in that place again once I use it there, and their noses are better than mine. :) I'd advise trying that before spending more money on something more expensive, like renting a steam cleaner or something. Good luck!

We just rented a carpet steam cleaner over the weekend and WOW!!! it got out everything that nothing else would. Once you get your dog completely house-broke you should try it but until then just use what others have suggested. For pee you might want to sprinkle it with vinegar so the dog won't return to the same spot. It's important that the dog can't smell urine on the carpets.

You do not need to buy anything expensive. The ingredients you need are baking soda, vinegar, dish washing liquid, and hydrogen peroxide. This will work on both the stain and the odor. Many people swear by various commercial products and you could buy something from a pet store or from a vet, but this recipe will work just as well and won't cost as much.
Best of luck with it.

use spot shot for the stain and then go back with solution of vinegar and water blotting several times a day for several days with white rag or white paper towels. This gets down to the padding and will help get rid of the odor so no more "accidents" in that area

Where they rent carpet cleaners (grocery store/ hardware store), Rug Doctor and other brands sell things like Odor Remover. It's to be used in the machines, but it also has instructions for using it by itself - spray and scrub the area. Places like Home Depot might sell it to people who own their own carpet cleaners.
