Battle of Troy a.k.a. the trojan War.

According to Greek mythology, it started when Paris of Troy was asked by 3 goddesses whom he would favour in return for blessing from that chosen goddess (Aphrodite - who would give him love, Hera - who would give him power, Minerva - who would give him wisdom)

Paris chose Aphrodite & was given Helen. The problem is that Helen was already married to the Spartan king who naturally wanted vengeance.

Hence, an alliance of the Greek city states led by Agemennom (who incidentally also wanted to extend his power & influence over the Tojans).

The highlight of the battle was the 1 on 1 fight between Hector & Achilles during which Hector was slain as Achilles was nearly invincible - his heels being his only weak point. As a child, Achilles' mother held him by his heels when she dipped him into a pot of magical liquid to render him invincible.

The Greeks couldn't breach the fortifications of Troy & resorted to treachery.
Here, the actual story differs from that of the movie.

The Trojan king & his council wanted to bring the wooden horse into the city, thinking that it was left behind by the "retreating" greeks as a sacrifice to the gods. Laocoon, the Trojan high priest, councelled against bringing the horse in & was crushed by serpents sent by Hera (or Athena?)

Thereupon, the Trojans, fearing they had insulted the gods, brought the wooden horse into the city & the rest is history...
