I would say the major difference is that a fence is made up of different pieces put together, you can usually look threw a fence. Even if it's just a tiny crack. A fence is usually wood or plastic of some sort. You can buy a fence at a store, the pieces for it that is. A wall is usually solid, concrete, or a solid piece of wood or dry wall something along those lines. You cannot look through it unless someone has put a whole in it lol. Fences are usually for looks or to devide sections, some slight privacy. A wall is usually to block something out, a retaining wall can be used to hold up dirt etc. You wouldn't use a fence to support something and you wouldn't put a wall in your front yard around your grass. Except for rich people who are trying to hide from the world or for locked communities but even those are usually fences. Wow never thought I'd be analyzing a fence vs a wall.

A fence is made from long lengths of some material running parallel, possibly with another batch going crosswise. It usually has gaps. Fences are mostly used for dividing areas, in a more or less secure fashion.
A wall is made from a single slab or from blocks laid side by side. It is usually a solid surface, except for designed openings. Walls are used for either structural support or security.

A wall is more solid and usually harder to climb when you are running from the police.
A fence is easier to climb when running from the cops unless it is very high. You can grap on to it better.

I live in NH and a wall here means "stone wall" and it is made, of course. of stones. There are so many around here and they are absolutely fabulous. Fences are made of wood.
