Yes it will work just fine as long as your tranny and mounting holes match up, otherwise it could run into some pretty serious money. You may also want to consider the fact that you would probably be getting a carburated engine instead of a fuel injected one, there are some differences in how they start and run, as well as mileage.
(By the way, 70's and 80's are earlier models, not later)

Contrary to what some people may say, not all chevy 350's are created equal. Some have two bolt main bearings, some have four bolt mains. It depends if your truck is a 1 ton or a 1/2 ton. If you change to an earlier 350, you may also have issues with your engine control computer. If you are buying a remanufactured engine from your local parts store, putting it in a truck that is not the same year may also void the warranty, which is not good considering how much money you have invested. I have sold engines to people that did the swap you are talking about. They always have issues and blame it on the engine. Is the swap possible, yes. Is it worth the trouble of changing the computer, wiring harnesses, exhaust, belt pulleys, brackets, etc, etc, only you can decide that. I will always recommend going back with original equipment.

NO. the intake bolts on a 96 are straight up and on earlier 350s they are at angles. so you will need another vortec engine or at least the heads off a vortec. thats what I did just put new heads on a older block that way I could still use the fuel injection.

Older 350's will bolt up to the tranny and motor mounts but the heads and intake required to run the fuel injection system will not fit an older block.

If you have the registration worked out, go for the swap. DMV is the hardest part. The ECM were different over the years so that is going to be your next obstacle. You may save money and headaches by rebuilding your engine.

Rebuild or replace the motor with a matching vin motor. You'll spend alot of money using an older motor.
