I have to switch it to default for something I need to do and then I want to switch it back to firefox.

No, I remember there is some way to do it without opening internet explorer at all. Thats the way i'm talking about... I just can't remember what i did.

Click TOOLS then INTERNET OPTIONS then look for the PROGRAMS tab.
At the bottom, click INTERNET EXPLORER SHOULD CHECK...
That does it.

How to Set Internet Explorer as My Default Browser
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. In the Tools menu at the top, select Internet Options. A new window will appear.
3. Select the Programs tab.
4. At the bottom of the window, check the Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the
default browser box. Select Apply.
5. If the box is already checked, remove it. Select Apply. Then, check the box again. Select Apply
again.
6. Select OK.
7. Close Internet Explorer.
8. Open Internet Explorer. A confirmation window will appear that prompts you to select Internet
Explorer as your default browser.
9. If desired, remove the check in the box next to Always perform this check when starting Internet
Explorer. Select Yes.
10. Internet Explorer will open and will be your default browser.

Click Tools at the top of your screen, click Internet Options, click the Programs tab, under where it says Default web browser it will say Internet Explorer is not the default web browser, click Make default, check mark Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default web browser, click Apply and OK.

Start Internet Explorer, go to "Tools" menu and click "Internet Options". Now click "Programs" tab and check the "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is default browser". Restart Internet Explorer, and it should ask if you want Internet Explorer as default web browser. Click "Yes" and your're done!

Its very easy
Go to tools - > Internet Options ---> Programs tab--->> just checked this check box.... "internet exploer should chek to see whether its the default browser"""
just unckeched this optiions if u make firefox ur default browser thats it....
