Can anyone here sum up the basis/fopundation for ALL living things; plants, animals, bacteria, protists and fungi? Could you reduce it to one simple statement or equation?

Water. Without water life would not exist as it causes the shaping of molecules that are hydrophobic away from an aqueous environment and allowed for the formation of the first cellular membranes.

The ability of life forms to reproduce (pass on there form and function) lies in DNA. However, DNA alone does not equal life.

Previous answers that say "DNA" are incorrect.
The genetic material can be DNA or RNA...
I would say that the basis of all life comes from DNA and/or RNA because genomic DNA and RNA code for proteins that determine the structures and functions (biochemical) of living cells, which make up all living things (that we know of on earth).
