I saw a documentary of 9-11 today on HBO and as always tears came from my eyes. There is still a part of me that fears a recurrence of such a horrible terrorist crime, however to compare Katrina's i have mixed emotions of sadness, empathy and anger. We have to take into consideration that katrina was a natural disaster and 9-11 was a cowardly act, yet the fact that both were terrible and the reaction of the government aid to Katrina still have me baffled.

What does a hurricane (which we have dozens that happen every year here) and a terrorist attack on our country have to even remotely do with one another? lol

the thing with me is that 9/11 hit closer to home. i live in nyc and witnessed the attack. everytime i drive to manhattan from brooklyn i look up at the skyline hoping to see the twin towers, and wishing that it was all a bad dream but its not. When Katrina happened i felt terrible and i still do but i dont have a constant reminder of it like i do of 9/11

The coverage of Katrina infuriates me. Especially when you see how nothing has changed. I have relatives in southern Mississippi and they had their entire area flattened. Their governor showed up in work clothes two days later and started rebuilding. Louisiana's governor hid and expected the feds to solve everything. Mississippi also received fed aid, but did not sit on thier collective *** waiting for the dough to come rolling in. It is amazing to see how much coruption there is in Louisiana and how 15% of the fed aid has been misused. Then some of the people down there, Mayor Ray, have the nerve to compare themselves to 9/11.
The fact that he was re-elected astounds me. Well, not really, he did have people bussed in from texas to vote, many of which had never lived in new orleans. Ironic, isn't it. The man who couldn't bus people out before the hurricane spent the money to have people bussed in to make sure he still had a job. Sickens me. People need to stop blaming the fed for it's problems down there and look at the real source. A govenor who ran and kept the guard from coming in until there was widespread issues, a mayor who fled and lied to various political figures to get re-elected, and an out dated series of levees that the state government would not pay to update. I think there is no comparison. There is nowhere near a comparison in terms of loss of life. The only comparison is the ignorance of those in control. The government messed up on intellegence before 9/11 and Louisiana politics screwed up before and after Katrina.

Since 9/11 was manmade, there is more reason to be angry. It's not like you can be angry at mother nature. Plus, 9/11 had the potential to start a war whereas Katrina did not. So, 9/11 makes me more angry and let's face it, the government messed up more going into Iraq than post-Katrina..

They both were ho-hum, I feel.

That's a sad commentary on the way we live our lives.

The best quotation comes from my brother-in-law, who walked back from the site of the Twin Towers, to 42 nd. Street to try and catch a train going to upstate N.Y.

When we asked him what he thought (that night he got home), he said...

"I think they are done, for now".

Today, five years later, I think we are done.
