What ruins your nails from having artificial enhancements done is the nail technician. If you go to a budget nail salon more than likely they will use a drill to file your nails. That causes the most damage. Inferior products can also damage your nails.

Remember, you get what you pay for. If you aren't willing to spend the money for quality work then don't do it because cheap, inferior work will ruin your nails.

My brother's girlfriend is a licensed nail tech. She said that any kind of fake nail can damage the nail, but much of it does depend on how it is applied (by you or by the tech) and for how long.

If you push the cuticle back too hard, or using a contaminated board, you can damage the nail matrix (where the nail grows from), or give yourself a nice infection of Hepatitis. This is why a fresh board should be used for each manicure (Tracy won't say what kind of board; she says you'll know what she means).

If you file across the top of your nail to create grooves for the adhesive to stick better, you're really damaging the nail. Tracy says to buy your own acrylics and use clear nail polish instead of the glue included to see if that works - it may be strong enough.

Tracy also says that if you get your nails done for Homecoming and Prom, like twice a year, you won't have any problems so long as the techs use either fresh or sterilized equipment.

Personally I find it fascinating that women go through so much work while men don't have to - then again, we don't look nearly as gorgeous - ever - as the women do.

P.S. Tracy says that gel nails aren't nearly as harmful as acrylics, but much more expensive.

Yeah, if they start to lift up at the cuticle edge moisture can get trapped inside and you can literally get mold that will turn your nail bright green

Other than that when you remove them it tears up your nail because it is bonded to it, so the top is all shredded up. It just has to grow out.

Also the fake nails do not naturally inhibit bacteria like natural nails do. It is more likely to spread bacteria when you touch things, especially under the nail, so be extra careful to scrub with a nail brush and soap when you have them.

I love them! They do damage your own nails (chemicals and filing) but they are great if you want to keep them up. If you can grow nice long nails then I wouldn't get them. I can't so I have acrylics.
Good luck!

I like them. they are easy to maintain and if one breaks I can get it fixed. Yes they wear down your nails, but nails will always grow back to the original state.
