A ketostick measures the level of ketones in the blood. You dip the ketostik into your urine and you get a color change to indicate ketone levels in the body and blood. Diabetics can end up with a higher than normal level of ketones, (organic chemicals related to aldehydes, and organic alcohols.. Ketones pile up when glucose metabolism goes out of control when proteins are used for energy instead of sugars and their carbohydrates. Lexperienced low carb dieters regularly use keto sticks.
Low carbohydrate diets (Atkins etc.), can lead to ketosis. Metabolism of proteins and their amino acid building blocks can cause ketone bodies, and eventually ketosis. Steps should be taken when ketone bodies rise to abnormal levels.

Ketostix is Bayer's brand name for test strips which measure the level of ketones in the urine. They are used by type 1 and type 2 diabetics to detect ketoacidosis (a dangerous condition) and by low-carb dieters to measure benign dietary ketosis or lipolysis, the burning of fat.

Other brands of ketone test strips are Uriscan and Atkins.
