I am going to a wedding in late september...its outside in the afternoon - wondering what would be appropriate to wear as a guest.
I have a brown flow-y halter dress but it has sequins and i've heard you shouldn't wear sequins to a daytime wedding? it is otherwise a summery fabric. also, anytips on heel height - anything goes? is the color appropriate or would pastel be better? i am open to buying a new dress too.
and finally, for him, is a suit necessary or would a sport jacket with shirt & tie be just as good or better? what kind of pants then? Thanks for your help!!! I am clueless about this stuff.

The dress sounds a little much for a day wedding. You are right about sequins, they should be reserved for evenings.

If it was me, I would stick to darker fall colors. Deep greens, browns, burgundy, navy, etc...
I would wear pants or a below the knee skirt/dress for warmth. You never know what the temperature will be.
Since it is outside, I would also go with a low or mid heel. Anything over 3" might be too much since most outdoor weddings are in the grass or other soft terrain.
If the dress was sleeveless or short sleeves, I would try to find a wrap or jacket to throw on. You can always take it off if you get too warm.

For him, either the jacket or the tie would probably be enough. He should not wear both. A jacket without a tie is a more causal look, as is a dress shirt and tie without a jacket. I would go with the jacket and leave the tie home. Like you, he can take it on or off depending on the weather. The pants should be comfortable slacks. I'm a big fan of chinos and flat front pants, not pleated pants.

The big thing here is to be comfortable for the weather, then style secondly. If you are unsure, call and ask the bride about attire. She can point you in the right direction for formality. My guess is that is will be more informal, but not flat out casual.

Just some appropriate styles:

Yes, avoid the sequins if it is a daytime wedding. You may consider buying a whole new dress... just something nice that isn't too dressy. I also recommend visiting www.breezybeachwear.com A pretty silk flower hair clip or jewelry item would be a nice addition to your outfit.
As for the guy... it's his choice. He can wear the suit, but the sport jacket and tie would be fine too.
Have a great time!

For Her: A light breezy, pastel colored dress, maybe even with a bit of a floral pattern. Also you could take along a scarf for chilly weather. Heel height depends on your height, and what dress you choose in the end. But if you were to pick something like I just described, I'd say a medium heel, with a shoe that was more a sandal than a dress heel.

For Him: I agree with the others that said dress slacks and a nice shirt (sport coat for cool weather).

I'd say sequins aren't really a big deal.
Maybe the color though.
Brown can tend to be a bit of a depressing color.
It's a wedding, wear something bright. :)

As for him, i'd say nothing to up heave, a nice dress shirt, tie, just casual dress pants. But no Jeans !

for her: any kind of dress would work..nothing too fancy...ive never heard about the sequins thing...the dress you have sounds fine.as for shoes..anything goes..as long as it matches the dress properly..

For him:
Dress pants(plain front) and a dress shirt with a tie and sport coat if it gets cool. some nice dress shoes too...
