third times the charm so they say!! Ive decided that the fuel pump is faulty. I dont want to drop the tank to change it out without being sure. can anyone tell me a test or two that will pinpoint the fuelpump as the culprit? i think that the fuel filter clogged up and then due to shear stupidity i kept trying to start the truck thus burning out the fuel pump! 603-642-8124 1996 chevy S-10 pick-up

we have a 96 blazer s10 series..our fuel pump also went out..

we replaced EVERYTHING first..before figuring out it was the pump..

have someone try to start your truck..while you/someone is listening for the "pump prime"(its like a buzzing noise) if you dont hear it..your fuel pump is gone.

The pump in the tank should make some noise when the key is turned on. It has to add pressure to the system to make the injectors work properly.

If it has sat for awhile, get your ear up to the tank and have someone turn the key on. You should hear some noise in there. It will most likely only run a few seconds without the engine running. there is a device that stops the pump if the engine is not running to prevent gas from pouring out in case of accident. Oh that reminds me, some vehicles have a bump protector. If you hit something hard, it will shut off the pump, again to protect in case of accident. There is a way to reset it but you need to call dealer for that info.
You could pull the hose off at the filter and have someone crank the engine to see how much fuel flows out. The pump might run but not deliver enough fuel pressure. If you have a guage and some extra hose, connect to the line before the fuel filter and crank the engine to see how much pressure. Most systems like yours put out 20 or more pounds. Less then that is likely not enough.

Is your fuel pump electric or does it ride on your cam or crank shaft?
Elect; First check for juice at fuel pump with meter turning key on and off. If the wire has juice your pump may still be bad so disconnect the out going fuel line and see if fuel pumps through.
Cut your search into peices starting at the gas tank, before the fuel pump, after the fuel pump, then to filter. then carb or injection system. Each step leads to answer. good luck

You could try unhooking the fuel line somewhere before the engine. Then have someone turn the key to run position and see if you get any sort of fuel flow out of the line. Just do it lonh enough to get a look so you don't have gas everywhere.

Good Luck

for about $15 you should buy a repair manual for your truck it will tell you how to isolate the fuel pump as being or not being the culprit as well as fixing any other issue that may arise with vehicle it will pay for itself first time you use it they are availible at any autoparts store, major bookstores,or online there should be a relay that you run a jumper wire across or give it 12volts power and fuel pump will run for abuot 3 seconds if it does not run bad pump if it does bad relay

it might not even be what you are sayin. 1 day we drove around all day and went for gas and then the thing wouldn't start after. it died in the gas station parking lot thank god ( damm thing is heavy to push) and they did the work there and told us it was the oxygen sensor.. it just kept over-fueling it self, choking it out but when it did start for 2 seconds or so all you saw was thick black smoke like a diesel would put out. worx fine now.
