Cross country requires endurance and that's what it's pretty much about. Do lots of long-distance running. Start out with 1.5 miles a day and slowly but surely increase the distance to 2 miles and gradually work up to 5-6 miles a day. That's what you'll have to run during practices so get used to it. A race is about 2 miles long and that's the shortest they'll get. Remember to breath in through your mouth and out your nose, that helps to control your breathing.

pace your self. Run 1 mile a day for a few weeks then, bump it up to 2, 3, and so on.
