Fear of flying Welcome aboard

Sep 7th 2006
From The Economist print edition

...."Also, please keep your seat belt fastened when seated, even if the seat-belt light is not illuminated. This is to protect you from the risk of clear-air turbulence, a rare but extremely nasty form of disturbance that can cause severe injury. Imagine the heavy food trolleys jumping into the air and bashing into the overhead lockers, and you will have some idea of how nasty it can be. We don't want to scare you. Still, keep that seat belt fastened all the same."

The most common turbulence is convection, which happens in and below clouds. But another cause is windshear, when a short distance apart horizontally or vertically there's a difference in wind speed. Like at the edge of the jet stream, where airliners often fly, and when there's a strong wind near the ground; the layer of air next to the ground is almost stationary but just above it is a strong wind. This is clear air turbulence. To some extent you can forecast when and where it's likely; if you know where the jet stream is, or if you know that surface winds are strong, you watch out for it.

CAT is turbulence that is not related to any visible cause. If, for instance, you see a large thunderstorm ahead you can expect to be bounced around a bit and prepare for it. When any of the several causes of CAT occur the plane can be flying along and suddenly encounter violent changes in altitude and severe wind shear making the plane difficult to control.

Often the worst turbulence occurs during Stormy weather; occasionally, turbulent air conditions develop even when there is no visible sign of bad weather.
