I think it's because Canada has more ties to Europe.

I wouldn't say we are more tolerant than Americans, just more apt to go with what we are told to do. As far as our health care system is concerned it isn't so super - we have 18 month plus waiting lists for just about every surgical procedure and cancer treatment centres are so overbooked that half the people end up dying of operable cancer before receiving treatment. We also are taxed out our wazoos (55% income tax on our paycheques and we are charged 8% provincial tax and 7% GST tax on every purchase we make - atleast in Ontario, it's higher/lower in other provinces depending where you live) We do celebrate diversity a lot more this is true but we have "rednecks" just like Americans and the more "tolerant" laws become of different religions and races the worse the bigotry gets.
We do have an absolutely beautiful country though. The landscape and the architectures in some cities are astounding and we do tend to be cleaner. The one thing I wish Canadians would do like Americans is be more patriotic. You tend to see an immigrant in America say "I love America, home of the brave" way more often than you do a Canadian immigrant which is really a shame. We also need to wave our flags more proudly and insist that prayer and the singing of the National Anthem is brought back. That was taking the whole political correctness too far.
And by the way - the lady that said weed is legal here? Ummm yeah no. For medicinal purposes it is - for which you have to get medical clearance that they're not willing to hand over to just anyone, and you have to carry a permit as well. It's not as much as an offence as in the States but it is still against the law. That's just an urban legend.

Not all Americans are intolerant. I'm an American and consider myself very tolerant and accepting of all different people no matter what race, gender, religion or orientation they are. I think our country as whole is very set in fundamental Christian ways and that probably pays the biggest part in the general intolerance you are referring to. I don't have anything against Christianity, my family is Presbyterian, but I do think many people here are stubborn due to religious beliefs and it bothers me that they will not accept someone who does not see things their way. I love my country though, I just wish some attitudes would change.

Sorry what? they have as many issues as us. Canada is just a quieter version of the US. You can't say Canadians are more tolerant than Americans unless you have lived in both places.

Do you know any Canadians? I am assuming by your question you are from the U.S.
I am a U.S. native, but had a 5 year relationship with a man (grown man) from Montreal. He lives here in the U.S. at this time.
Don't let the hype fool you. They are just as bigoted, and non-tolerant as U.S. people are. People are people, no matter where you go.

I think Canada is more relaxed because it is not dealing with the stress that other countries are. Canada is not among the "super powers" and their day in day out concerns are simpler than for instance ours.
