You are definitely an American, 'cause only Americans can be as ignorant as you are. If you are "a follower of all kinds of sports" you would know that Zidane has scored twice in 1998 WC final against Brasil, and that was first title for France ever in World Ch. He played for some of the world's biggest football clubs, like Juventus and Real Madrid. And of course, he was named Best Footballer of the World and he definitely was one of the best football players of all times. But Americans don't care, all you need to know is that famous headbutt.
Real news for Americans are: the name of Tom Cruise's little daughter, size of Jessica Simpson's and Pamela's boobs, Bush is still trying to find WMS's, Mariah Carey made even worse album than the last one... Football, specially european, is not for you dude, so go back to baseball.
Follower, yeah right!

I'd heard of him before. He's a legend in France, and one of the French exchange students at my school was positively SCANDALIZED when my friends and I said we'd never heard of him. So he immediately got online and made us read stuff about him. This was in the fall of last year, so I'd known about him for about 10 months before that incident. He was probably made famous over in the US by "that one dumb act," but I think everyone else in the world had already heard of him because soccer is so much bigger everywhere else.

Zidane has been a famous footballer for a while, most Europeans knew his name LONG before the WC 06. Only across the big pond would they not know Zidane

He was a great player before that. He played amazingly in France for the world cup, and he had played a few brilliant seasons for Real Madrid before that. You cant have been following football (sorry, soccer to you americans) very closely if you didnt know who zidane was. He is a football legend.

I'm Canadian and I know him.
I've known him since I was 7...
First footballer name I knew... Though I thought it was weird at first, now it's like music to my ears.
Then I learnt Trezeguet and Dugarry.
In 1998 I painted the French falg on my car... Teehee, good times.
ARE YOU AN IDIOT?
HONESTLY!
DON'T CALL YOURSELF A SOCCER/FOOTBALL FOLLOWER IF YOU DON'T KNOW ZIZOU! :@
See the only reason Zidane's headbutt is famous is because he was famous at first... Oh wait a second let me make this easier for you.
U no wen Jen and Brad brok ^ wel no1 in the world wuldve nown if dey wernt populr in da 1st place.
Don't ask stupid questions like this please, it makes all of North America look stupid... Including Canada and me.
Go back to the Nascar category, allright?

Yes, and right now he is watching the game Marseille-Paris Saint Germain. Marseille is leading 1 nil.
Update, PSG-Mars 1-1.
Even some places in Africa have heard of him but guess what they don't know what he looks like because they have no TV. Eat that one up, that's the truth.
When it comes to technology and communications, USA feels like the Third World, you are proof of it.

yes and I've heard a lot of good things about him:down-to-Earth character, calm, skillful, legendary football player..after the incident,I can still hear a lot of good things from him..let him go..he apologized for his act..if you haven't heard of him before the incident, then that means you're not a true football fan..Zidane IS a well-known player even before the incident..

Wrong he was already famous since France had won the last World Cup in 2002 was it or 1998, I can't remember. If you don't believe me play PS2's Soccer World Cup game and pick France as a team.
