First unistall the update.
Second, to make sure you don't have a virus run a virus software cd on your computer asking it to check the whole computer for viruses/problems that may be causing the computer to crash. Don't load the virus detection software onto your computer. Run it from the cd.
3.Check how much memory the update requires to run against how much memory is available on the computer. Remember to do some simple addition. If the program requires a full version of internet explorer plus adds to it without replacing anything this increases the chances that you may not have enough memory to run the updated program.

Good luck in solving your problem.

you are not the only one this has happened to,first you must uninstall this, but unfortunateely thats were you problems dont end
most users who have uninstalled i.e 7 have found that they cant do certain functions within internet explorer ,but you may be lucky,i recommend you do the uninstall then do a system restore to around a day before you installed internet explorer7
if like me you still get crashes, your best bet is either a fresh windows xp install,or download and install a different browser such as mozzila firefox(http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/),i use this all the time now with no problems at all
the problems with internet explorer is its prone to too many
bugs as its the most widely used browser
good luck
