How would you know if Altell (for example) would have better cell phone quality than Spirint (or any other cell phone company) before you sign the contract for 3 years?

Ask your neighbors so you know what works in your neighborhood. Then pick from those. I would not use a service that is not used by any of your neighbors. I did one and ended up with a very large and upsetting problem.

You can ask people about their experiences with the company, but when I had US Cellular...I had 30 days to "try it out" and in that 30 period, if I decided I didn't like US Cellular, I could cancel service and the contract would be nulled, with no charges to cancel service and the contract. I ended up liking US Cellular though, and stayed.

It was kind of like a "30 day risk free trial"

Asking people who already have those plans is a great way, also doing some research on the internet would help.
