I have a sunfire 2000 2.2 lit motor automatic. The rear wheel thumps as i apply the brakes or even when I slow down. Its not the rims. This has been a problem on countless sunfires and Caveliers. I beleive the wheel is not round. Has another actually seen GM do anything about this problem. Like a recall. Any comments?

If you ONLY hear the "thumping sound" when you apply the brakes doesn't it stand to reason that it is "brake related"?

If it were me I would jack the car up, remove the rear wheel I thought most likely is the culprit and spin the rim with no brakes on. Then, I would have an assistant lightly tap the brakes and look for inconsistencies in friction. I would do the same thing to the other side.

Have you recently had the shoes/pads replaced? If you did any heavy braking too soon after buying the new equipment you may have damaged the shoes/pads.

Well, that is where I would start anyway.

Possibly a broken shock. When you apply the brakes, naturally the front brakes take the inertia load. At higher speeds, this will place a lot of the weight on the front of the car, causing wheel hop in the rear if your have work or broken shocks.

1. check to see if your radial bands have seperated inside you tire. This will not be obvious and you may have to rotate your tires to determine.

2. If you have rear disk brakes, they occasionally warp causing a thumping sensation.
