I have to scrub the filth out of my horses water bucket way to often. It gets very discusting. Do you have any home remedies to keep it fresher, longer?

well at my barn we dump and scrub the buckets daily. Better to do it daily when it only takes about 15 seconds then wait until it is caked with green alge and have to scrub it for 10 minutes.
I have heard that for large water troughs you can buy those fish that live on alge and put them in the tank, horses won't eat them so don't worry about that.
If you have a little cash spring for an automatic waterer, since the water doesn't ever stand in the bucket for long its much harder for it to grow alge.

In response to a post above, DO NOT under any curcumstances put bleach in a horses water!!! they will not drink it (leading to dehydration and colic) and if they did they could become very sick. We can use bleach in city water b/c it becomes very diluted, but a horses bucket only holds about 5 gallons of water.

ONE CAPFUL OF BLEACH DOES NOT CHANGE THE TASTE OF THE WATER AND WILL NOT KILL YOUR HORSE. WE RUN A BOARDING STABLE AND THIS IS A PRACTICE WE DO TO KEEP ALL 45 BUCKETS CLEANER. WE DO CLEAN THEM THOROUGHLY ONCE A WEEK. THAT IS A TASK YOU WON'T AVOID.
