Is that your sync rate? DSL ISPS publish sync rate download/upload as something like 3008kps/512kps (download of about 3 Megs, upload speed at 512 kps. ) Take 15% off your published rate to allow for overhead, so whatever 80% of 256 is your download which is verrry slow. (Unless you're talking upload speeds, check with your provider).

You might mean 256 KB/s - that capital "B" makes all the difference. If that is the case, it'll take you roughly 4 seconds to download a 1MB file. To put that into context, most mp3s are around 5MB.

256 kbps is slow - we could not identify what is your download rate you should know this the first time you order dsl service, if you are within the perimter for what they call central Office you should get 384 kbps upload and 1500mbps for upload that is the basic service. try to ask your ISP the package you got.
