I'm 18 year old male and I don't care very much for sports.

Here is the question, Football season starts today. Recently last week some guy just started talking to me about Football, players and plays and all that. He asked did I like I football, I said yes, not wanting to look bad or anything. I just kept saying sure, right, conversations pieces. But I really didn't have a clue as to what he was saying. Other guys have ask what I think about this player and what. Should I just say I don't watch football.

When I was younger, I went down south to vist family. I saw some of my uncles, they asked what sports I liked, I told them, I didn't really like any and they just looked at me funny. You know when some one give you a funny look.

Should I just say when people ask "I don't look at sports". Or should I try and fake it? Or should I actually try and look at them. I just find it boring. Help.

Tell them straight out that you don't care for them. To "deflect" any sideways glances you might add "If I am not playing, I really just don't care."...

If you're going to hang out with a bunch of straight guys, you might want to start watching one sports show a day, or reading at least the headlines in the sports page, know the names of the local team's stars, and where that team is in the standings.

But don't lie. Just say, I don't much care for football. I read a lot. Or I'm more into tennis and rugby. LOL Most football fans won't know much about tennis or rugby, and if you study a couple sports like that, it can seem as though you're just fanatic about something else, rather than that you're not a "real man"

But what the heck. You can just be yourself and say you don't follow football, or pro basketball or whatever. You won't fool them for long anyway.

Kevin, it's the oddest thing: Many times men who are so overly interested in spectator sports aren't very good at sports themselves. Yet these same men get some kind of vicarious thrill out of talking sports with other men. I've never totally understood it but can remember being in the same boat you found yourself in with your new friend and your uncles.

My recommendation: I would not say, "I don't like sports." Rather say, "I haven't kept on on that particular team. What is going on?" Let them carry the conversation.

As I've aged I now realize that these over zealous male sports fans are not the type of people I want to hang out with, but when I am in conversation with them, I try to be polite. I've discovered the activities I enjoy doing with my friends or by myself and that makes me feel good. I pay not one bit of attention to any of my male acquaintances or relatives who are still hung up on watching others play a game but don't exercise themselves. And believe me, I've run into these characters to this day, even at my age.

Is it wrong to be a spectator in sports? No. But it is wrong when males (of any orientation) put us down for not enjoying being a spectator as well.

All of this brings up an important point: Hang out with people who enjoy doing at least some of the things you enjoy doing. Hope this helps.

Be yourself and say you don't like sports. I had a girl here get an attitude with me last week because it was kickoff and myself and few other girls were watching the game in the TV room here at school. She had this HUGE attitude like "girls watch football? What's wrong with you?"
I wasn't about to back down and tell her I was kidding. I love sports! Watch them all the time.
Oh well, can't win 'em all. But yah, just be honest. I mean, seriously, nobody's going to kill you because you don't like sports. Sports isn't for everybody.

Someone will ask you the names of the player sand you won't be able to answer them. You either say i don't watch sports or be embarrassed when you can't answer there questions or watch them so you will at least know a little something about the sport.

Hockey to play. I play quite regularly. Hockey to watch. The only other sport I watch is baseball during the World Series.

actually, you don't have to watch sport if you don't like it. but don't pretend because when you don't know, you don't. look, when talking about sports, just say you don't watch sport, you prefer (whatever you prefer), and change the conversation around what you like. I don't watch football, nor baseball... so when people ask me questions about that, I just say i don't like it or watch it. they can look at me funny, i don't really care since i ain't obliged to like that... I like tennis, if someone doesn't watch tennis, I understand completely... it's your taste, not theirs. you're not them, you are you!

Don't fake or lie, is the most wronger action ever, that makes you less authentic than you really are, if you don't like sports use your diplomacy but make sure at least you know what's goin' on whatever show is on tv or anywhere, anyway your straights friends are truly friends if they respect your thoughts and opinions as do you respect theirs.

Don't try to fake conversations, people can tell when you have NO idea what you're talking about!

I'm sure you'll find conversation with people about something besides sports! It's a crappy idea to fake yourself for someone.

I just told and tell people that I'm really not into organized team sports..that I prefer individual efforts ..like swimming, diving, running....not that I'm into any of them..but it stops the questions.

Be honest; If you don't like sports, don't have it rubbed in your face.

Try this: If they start talking about sports and it makes you uncomfortable, start talking about something that they know nothing about or something that makes them uncomfortable.
