The simpler and more direct the question, the easier it is to get a specific answer. But also the more likely that answer won't be all that you're looking for.

The most effective approach is dialog and discussion, exploring a concept with someone to understand their perspective on it. And that's not "prying it out of them", that's allowing them to open up and share their thoughts in a setting where they don't feel either threatened, or that they are wasting their time.

Just listen to them, not just hear them, understand what they say. As if you were saying it.
