I don't see how that could be safe anytime, pregnant or not.

i dont' think it matters that ur pregnant. was it a metal tongue ring? were the balls on good? i would think it would be fine but for the next couple of days until you poo it out pay close attention to any stomach pain or intestinal pain. the only problem it could cause is poking through your intestinal tract which is very serious. i think it would be worth ur time to call and ask ur family doc about this, an intestinal leak is very serious and could kill u if u dont' get to a hospital within hours

If you are lucky it should just pass through with the rest of the waste your body expells. One of the downfalls of having oral peircings, is obviously swallowing them!! If the barbell was made of surgical steel or hypo allergenic plastic, it will not affect your body in anyway harmful. Try to pay some extra attention to your stomach and body functions, if you have any pain that isnt "normal", see your doctor and let him know what happened.

Is it safe to pick up the phone and ask your physician an important question like this that could be harmful to the baby

You'll be fine. If the metal or gem were capable of poisoning your blood and hurting the baby it would have already been doing so for the last 22 weeks.
