Think about what's causing your depression and try to change it, i.e., financial situation, personal/professional relationships, people in general, etc. If changing it isn't possible, find a way to deal with or accept it. Go shopping or do something that you've been wanting to do for a while. Traveling also helps relieve depression and other feelings that tag along with it.
Prescription medication should be a last resort solution to depression, especially since a lot of the pills on the market can become habit forming. If you become addicted to a "depression treatment" pill and your doctor decides to take you off of it, you'll be up the creek and in worse shape than before taking the pills.

Believe me ...you have a very positive approach..why you know ?
1. You have understood that you are getting depressed...
2. You feel that you should come out of this situation..
This itself is very good postive sign and i dont think you need external help to come of this situation..
There are so many ways to come out of the shell you r in !
1. Find out the real cause for this depression ..loneliness ? separation ? etc. etc/..
2. Find out the usual time at which you get dragged into this mood of depression ..during this time of the day, divert your mind into something else creative...
3. Start getting interested into other diversions like music, temples etc...for at least one hour per day..
4. Start developing GOOD friendship / chatfriends/ penfriendship...or so..
5. TRUE art of yoga and meditation has helped as "adjuvant" for many mdical conditions, in addition to the normal treatment..you know that ?
6. Nowadays, all leading hospitals and western countries have started "music therapy " as one of the adjuvants for medical treatment..
Try out these for two weeks..you will feel some changes...it is sure..
Maybe by that time, open out with your parents or best relative or friend about the problem of yours...ask them to give a helping hand...
Lastly...nowadays..there are many psychologists available all over the country in leading hospitals...maybe one sitting with them...if at all needed...(u will not require..i am sure) may make a world of difference..
Come out ...dont worry..
it is only a passing phase...
today is bright..
tomorrow is more BRIGHTER !
with all wishes...

I'm same age female in california and face the same trouble. Then I realised that being happy has nothing to with my surroundings.. .happiness comes from within...i know, u'll think what bookish ****. But trust me on this...it does happen that we make ourselves unhappy so many times coz we don't try to be happy. why is our happiness driven by the people around us or the circumstances or the materialistic desires...u just need to learn to keep yourself happy.
Listen to your favourite songs alone and eat something u enjoy simultanously...and dance
Go for shopping and spoil yourself
Take your decesions not bothering about what others will think
live your life the way u want and most importantly...LOVE YOURSELF...coz you are THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON ON THIS PLANET.
So smile now.....

I am a healthy male of sound body and mind and I am also 27. I too felt depression over some grief-filled times. My dear, you are experiencing a life that is not being fulfilled, and no matter what you do to try to fill your void, it will never be enough. You must turn to God and ask that He guide you towards a life that fulfills you and He will surely bring happiness to your life again. Do not shut Him out for it will mean doom. Take care and God bless you.

Sapna's advise is good. Also try meditation. Most popular anti-depressant medicines are SSRIs. SSRIs like Prozac or Zoloft increase the serotonin level in the brain, which makes us feel happy.
Research has shown that meditation naturally increases and balances many neuro-transmitters in the brain... which make us feel happy and content.
Good luck.
