Start by going to your local city council meetings and become involved in your local politics. If your primary ambition is to be president, you probably won't go very far. You have to show first that you care about the people in your community to start building a base.

First, have you attended (or are you in) college? If not, go to college. If so, here are some classes you'll need:
At least one foreign language.
Social Studies.
Geography.
Economics.
Law. (Law school is recommended.)
Ethics.
US History.
World History.
Speech.
You can choose from any of those as your major, and it would help you.
Start at the bottom: City council. Next, try for mayor. Even if you DON'T win (which you may not), at least your name will be out there. If you don't win, try again. Then move up: Governor, Congress or Senate (you need to be in one or the other for at least six years, if not ten or fifteen, if you can)...then, and only then, should you consider running for president.
Good luck.

Start with City Council. It will give you good experience with the nuts and bolts of public administration, and it you're good at it, you'll build a base of loyal supports who can help you move up later on.
Senators and Congresspersons almost never get elected President so if that's your goal, your next steps should be Mayor and Governor.

No, no, no, no, no to all the answers so far.
Here's what you do.
If you're really interested in helping seniors, disabled, children and low income families find out all you can about them. Love them, live with them and understand their problems. Then see what you can do to help them. Find a way to focus attention on their plight. Try to get your congressman on board with you. Organize a group to stage a charity event that will spotlight the issue and benefit those you are trying to help. Suggest ideas and come up with solutions to the problems. That's the way to help them.

Join the Dem or Rep party in your local area (town, or ward or like that). Go to meetings, get to know people. When you are ready, run for Alderman.

Don't start with Harry Reid. If that is your hero, just smoke joint after joint, and you'll be guranteed half of the liberal vote.
As for me, I couldn't give a rat's *** for your gender or color. I'll vote for the best candidate. "Woman president"? Who gives a crap! We need someone that can lead, man-woman, white-black. Why make a deal about your sex? That's the foundation for racists and sexists.

I asked my uncle who is a big-wig in the Republican party about running for Congress. He told me to raise $1,000,000 (ONE MILLION DOLLARS) If I couldn't do that then don't bother even trying.
