Depends on your washer, how dirty your dishes are. Mostly, though, it depends on how hard the water is in your area. I use those tabs that already have the rinse aid in them, but I still use a separate one as well, because the water in my area is really hard. But I don't have to use quite as much as I would normally. You'll probably have to do a little experimenting on your own (though if you know the how hard or soft the water you use is, that might answer the question for you). I'd stick with the tabs, though, because I've found that they work much better than the "old" dishwasher soap. I think it's a better deal, too.

you still need salt nut not rinse ad. i still use both for a better wash

they do say you should if u live in a hard water area

mind you i use the swanky new 5 in ones!
