In United States each state has a license board. I live in California so we have California State License Board which is online and you can check on the status of license numbers. In California you can do repairs on a home up to $500 in cost without a license. Many "handymen" do not have licenses due to the fact that most of their repairs are done below this cost.

I think it's easiest to just call the city he's working in (or from). If you want to check on the status of his state license they should be able to help with that also. Depending on the extent and type of work he's doing, what you really should be concerned with is his insurance status. If his insurance isn't CURRENT, he could sue YOU if he gets hurt. Generally you want his insurance Co. to send you a copy so it can't be tampered with. A lot of work is done by unlicensed/uninsured handymen and all's well......but it only takes one accident.

That is usually a state license, so I'd start there. Usually, a hnadman can't do a lot, they can only do basic repairs. I doubt you'll be able to find a website that is helpful. I'd just ask the BBB or get references.
