Take 360 degrees and divide by 12 numbers -that means between each set of numbers you have 30 degrees. How many spaces are between the 7 hand and the 10 hand? 3 spaces times 30 degrees each is 90 degrees. If the hour hand moves at a steady rate, it will get 1 degree closer for every 2 minutes. That means, in 50 minutes after the hour, it will have moved an extra 25 degrees. Take the 90 and subtract the 25 degrees -voila! 65 degrees.

justme didn't take into consideration that the hour hand will be close to the 8 at 7:50.

Since it is 30 degrees between numbers, every 10 minutes is 5 degrees. at :50 it would be 5 degrees below the 8, so the correct answer is 65 degrees

i think u must'v got it, but i'll try to make it simpler.. the entire circle is 360 degrees... one minute is 360/60=6 degrees..
at 7.50, the minute hand is at 10, and the hour hand is somewhere between 7 and 8..
the hour hand moves 5 minutes(from 7 to 8) in 1 whole hour (60 minutes) thats is, 30 degrees in one hour. so, in 50 minutes, it moves 50/60 of 30 degrees = 25 degrees..
so, the diff between 7 and 10 is 15*6=90 degrees.. subtract the 10 degrees the hour hand has moved.. 90-25= 65 degrees...ta-da!!

If you are placing your compass correctly you should get a correct reading. Remember that the little hand isn't quite at the 8 o'clock position. If I were there with you I could help you. Hope this helps.
