How you communicate, whether written or spoken, will carry a great deal of weight as you progress through life. If you do not speak or write well, people will assume you are poorly educated and will be less likely to work with you.

It's important, because bad grammar can make it hard for someone to comprehend your meaning. It can be hard enough even with perfect grammar. Just because *you* know what you meant to say doesn't mean it's clear to the reader.

Sure, you can be a bit sloppy sometimes and get away with it, but the more careful you are about how you write, the better the chance you have of executing a successful communication.

Well, should you rephrase your question again and write - "How important is grammar so long as another can comprehend what is meant to have been said" you may get a better answer than this one since I myself do not know where you went wrong in the asking of that question - but I do know that you have thrown in an error in syntax as well as a phonetically correct but grammatically wrong "u" in your letter.
Of course with proper grammar you may get a very good job at a University .. and without it - you may get any other job paying more .. but who knows?

Often, of course, grammer aids in comprehension. Panda eats shoots and leaves can be, in a popular example, be punctuated in ways to create very different meanings out of those same words. However, assuming one does comprehend, and so the poor grammar doesn't present that problem, why is grammar important?

It is a marker for social class, education level, region of origin. See "My Fair Lady."

Poor grammar gives an extremely bad first impression. It's also as annoying as hell. I generally assume a person has the IQ of a brick and isn't worth my time if they use poor grammar. I usually won't talk to them again, unless I have to, and I know I'm not alone in that.

It's not that I'm trying to be mean, but it's so annoying that I'm afraid I'll be unkind to them if I continue to try to speak to them. It's kind of sad, because there are actually some pretty smart people out there who have bad grammar and are held back because of it.

That depends on your surroundings. If you're among family, fine, whatever. If you're in a more formal setting, say a job interview, grammar is very important. Having proper grammar (not to mention a good vocabulary and annunciation) makes you look more competent and capable of the job you're applying for. Even if you're just meeting new people, it gives a great impression.

When using informal communication like this, the grammar isn't as important, as long as people understand you.
The problem is, when you write something, of course you know what you are trying to say. It might be more confusing to other people than you realize. If all you do is substitute u for you, it's pretty easy to understand, but some people get carried away.

It annoys me when people pick apart grammar to try to belittle someone. I think it's more polite, mature and civil to address the substance of what one says. When people can't refute an idea they sometimes resort to this kind of attack. I think it's actually very superficial and pseudo-intellectual to do so. Profound things can be said with bad grammar, it doesn't necessarily correlate with imagination or intelligence. If you're publishing something or writing something formal then I think, yes, grammar is quite important. If you're trying to convey a message it doesn't matter to me how you do it, it's only the substance that matters. Use flag signals or sign language for all I care as long as I can discern your meaning with a little effort!

since you are asking this in the "Higher Education (University +)" section...i think you should know that grammar is key in allowing the reader to comprehend what you are trying to say...and it is also a tool to help you say what you mean without confusion.

If you want to get your message across clearly, without people having to struggle to figure out what you mean, then you have to use correct grammar. Also, bad grammar and spelling make you look ignorant and uneducated.
