those seafaring men learnt first off how to dodge shark attacks. when those big sleeky fish went sailing up to the boats of the pioneer fellows on their missions of exploration, it took some extra practice hopping up and down to avoid being made into shark lunch. also, there were the pirates of the seven seas to worry about. when those mean buccaneers came sailing around, it was up to the americans to man their cannons and blow the scoundrels out of the water or face certain annihilation at the hands of the evil rogue sailors who wanted nothing more than more gold for their treasure chests and fair maidens in their bunks at night under the lonely pacific moon to keep the pirates warm and toasty.

Human nature doesn't change just because you cross the ocean. Compensation in differences in human nature may be made to suit differences in society. Human nature is established in an individual by his(her) environment, upbringing and family values.

i think it is because if you try to study it deeper, crossing the ocean actually means going abroad to gain knowledge in a foreign land rich with different cultures and beliefs. a person has to overcome and pass many hurdles to survive out there in the real world alone. they have to fend for themselves and learn to respect others. so, with all the experience gain when they 'cross the sea' to a land of vast diversities one is expcted to change either for the btter or worse. hope this helps.

i would think that by crossing the ocean and learning how other people lived, society, religions, belifes, lasw, etc. it would hopefully teach a better understanding of others and an appreciation of what they have to offer the rest of the world. in theory, it should help stop ignorance and fear of a mindset other than their own.
