My question is for a 2001 1500 Silverado pickup. The retaining clips released easily, but i have not been able to reinstall them.

Set an old cable next to a new cable. If they aren't exactly alike, you might have gotten the wrong cable. The new one should install exactly like the old one. Sometimes the new retaining clip is stronger then the old one because it's new. You might be trying to install the new ones backwards or upside down. If you can't seem to figure it out, go to your nearest parts store and find a partsman who knows how to install them. Most guys are happy to help. If they aren't, then find another parts store to frequent.
