our checks & balances are supposed to do that. but the power of lobbyists and the fund raising realies have distorted things. also the unbridled power of the executive branch, congress just rolled over and allowed their function & authority to be ursurped.

I think a third, a fourth, and a fifth party would help the US. What the United States needs to do is copy the parliamentary system of Canada to get more representation to these parties. This way people who vote Libertarian, Green, or Socialist can feel like they are being represented.

If by "quality" you mean another political party bent on making everyone follow them, then no. There are a large variety of smaller partiesout there right now, but no one actually pays attention to them. Do research on people running for office sometime and just vote on who you agree with most. ("Agree" meaning the one you'd be more comfortable with messing up on their job a lot.)

Yes, but right now the third party offerings are basically fringe nutcases that are far worse than what we have in the Republicans and Democrats. "Quality" is definitely what we need in a third party.
