Keep the screen brightness on low, turn off sound, eject disks and quit programs your aren't using, set the screen to dim after a short time (15 seconds) and set it to sleep after a couple minutes. Usually you can go under the power settings and select "Better Battery Life" as opposed to Better Performance.

1) Unplug periferals
2) Lower screen brightness
3) Make sure you dont have a CD/DVD inside
4) Close applications that are not in use
5) Turn it off or set it to sleep when not in use
6) Turn off wireless (this is the major energy eater)
To conserve the battery:
Let the battery drain at least once a week.

Don't use things such as sound, usb chargers for stuff, CDs, or anything else that looks like it's obviously taking a chunk of power. Also use hibernate mode whenever it's going to sit around unused. If you don't need to stay on then you can just turn it off instead.

be sure to charge it for the correct amount of time and discharge it fully from time to time.
batterys have some sort of memory thing that means they need charging correctly - ie 16 hrs from 1st ever charge then frequent discharges.
