I have a couple of old small appliances from the 1920's-1930's (Toaster, hair dryer, space heater, electric kettle stove) in my house, and in all the time I have never had one break down once, and these things are beautifully made in art deco style and have lasted 70-80 years. On the flip side, I have had expensive hair dryers, toasters etc that have given out after a year or two. What do you think is better quality, does anyone else use vintage applicances?

I have seen appliances from the sixties still working although I don't know how much electric they use. I am already replacing the appliances we purchased in the nineties. Go figure it cost more to talk to the repair man than buy a new one. Definitely Yesteryear

My old fridge and washing machine both lasted over 20 years with no problems, they eventually just stopped working. The next washing machine lasted 13 months, just after the guarantee expired. When we bought the new fridge I told the salesman how long we'd had the old one and he said, 'You can't expect to use this one for that long.'
Things now are made to wear out.

Quality has definitely diminished. I consider appliances today to be disposable almost. I too have several old small appliances that are still functional.

my mom used to have an old speed queen washer that she bought in 1955; it lasted until 1993. since then, she's had to replace her washer twice & they were both new. she also had a blender from the same year & she quit using that 5 yrs ago cause i accidentally dropped the glass thing that goes on the blender.
