I say write a letter to the head of CS and explain your situation. You can also go back to court and file a motion to stop child support. You should not have to take care of a child over age 18 if they are not in school. Commendations to you for taking care of your responsibility. I say fill out the motions and follow through with getting it stopped- good luck!

My understanding is that once she takes a year off school, she's emancipated, particularly if she moves out of the house, but it does very by state. You should get a lawyer to at least stop the support order, and you may even get lucky and find that your ex owes you some of the money back.

If the child is not in school and over 18, you should not have to pay child support. Get in touch with your lawyer and go to court to get the payments stopped.

Yeah, had same thing happen to us. Yeah they are working and doing their job but if you are paying child support directly then you are helping pay for other delinquent fathers. That's why they will not stop you. We had to go into the offices almost every day protesting and taking affidavit from stepdaughter. Her mother was secretly going into office advising them differently because she wanted to continue to collect money from them. It was a big mess and a whole bunch of headaches!! Get all your receipts in order and names of any social workers, write everything down, you're going to need everything. Good luck, invest in some good aspirin.

Why did your daughter quit school at 16 in the first place? She needs to go back to school to get a GED if she hasn't already.

You need to talk to the individuals in charge of dishing out the payments and let them know in EXPLICIT terms that your daughter is now over the age of 18 and you no longer need to provide child support.

If she's over 18 and not in college, then you need to talk to your attorney general's office. Bring proof, like her birth certificate, a letter from the school she left saying she left, etc. If that doesn't work, get a lawyer.
