A variety of herbs repel some insects. The herbs have some degree of insecticide property.

We lived on our sailboat in the tropics. I put bay leaves in all containers of food - flour, rice, oatmeal, etc. and in all our food compartments and we did not ever get insects in any of our dry food.

I don't know why it works - just that it does! For some reason insects seem to hate bay leaves. I'd guess it has something to do with the natural oils in the herbs.

Not sure about cockroaches, but they're supposed to repel ants. Scientifically don't know why, I assume it's because they don't like the smell.
