I know people who have huge gains from goin once a week, others who go everyday, but the key thing is what you can manage and what you can afford, how many exercises, sets and reps, you do, and spliting your routine i personally go 3 times a week.
Tuesday - Chest and Biceps
Thursday - Shoulders and Legs
Saturday - Back and Triceps
Resting muscles is important, and i also try to swim a mile or so on my non training days helps muscles wind down and tones the smaller muscles not cover in your workout.

loads of advice can do found on
www.muscletalk.co.uk
i personaly train 3 times a week
day 1 back and biceps and traps
day 2 chest and triceps
day 3 legs and shoulders
growing is MORE to do with eating/rest
dont get tempted to train the same body part more thane once a week other wise it wont have time to grow.
also try and avoid the fixed machines and use free weights
using fixed machines can result in un even muscle groth as the stronger side does more work
paul
p.s get on muscletalk :-)

At the beginning, train your whole body in one session.
Leave 2 to 3 days between sessions.
As you advance (6 Months)
Split the body parts for training into different days. ie:
Monday - Chest and Arms
Tuesday - Shoulders and Back
Wednesday - Legs
Thursday - Rest
Do abdominals Monday and Wednesday always lowers first
Friday - Chest and Arms etc, etc
This is called a 3 day split routine and gives muscles time to grow and repair.

atleast 3 to 4 times a week. if you have done weight training today for a particular muscle group, remember to rest that the next day. and work out the other muscle group day after that. so you can do alternate days if you like and most importantly remember to stretch before and after otherwise you'll get really sore everywhere...good luck...
