There is no doubt that the " catholic church" needed change but instead of the division that occured , a dialogue would have produced a much better result and would have showed a growth pattern to a superior religion then now exists. Christianity was weakened by the sectairinaism of the "reformation".

It split in two: Catholics and Protestants. Some princes in Europe converted to Protestantism so that they can get land holdings from the Catholic Church.

France supported the Spanish Armada while it fought the British fleet because both countries were largely Catholic save for a few Hugenots and England was a Protestant nation (helped by the Dutch, too).

So both branches of Christianity were used in power politics as well as warfare.

It mainly has to do with the fact that people started to mistrust the Catholics. The invention of the printing press brought about many changes in Europe. The first book mass produced was the bible. As more copies of the bible were printed, more people were starting to learn how to read. They discovered that the Catholics were putting their own spin on the bible, adding things that weren't there. Kind of their way of keeping the masses in check. It would be like me stating that the bible says to stop at a red light. It wasn't the truth, but it was to keep people in check. People started mistrusting the Catholics, and they decided to faction the church.

"the church" The Catholic Church?

the christian church was split, between the protestants and the catholics, at first in Germany with the Lutherans, but later on with other branches of the protestant faith, in other countries.

For more information, try looking up Martin Luther (not the guy from the 20th century, the one from the 1500s)
