It is a reclassification, grouping like with like.
Pluto has more in common with Xena and Ceres than it does with the 8 planets it was grouped with previously.
As for the Gods, I would think they were more concerned about the uses to which Plutonium, Neptunium and Uranium (all, like the 3 planets, named after Greek Gods) can be put and the mushroom clouds that might billow around and engulf Mount Olympus as a consequence.

pluto is not a planet, but pluto orbits the sun, is round, does not have an isolated orbit (a bunch of other similar bodies have similar orbits.), and is not a satellite so it is a dwarf planet. this does not change anything about the solar system or pluto. it just corrects the mistake of classifying pluto as a planet initially.
i have been waiting for this since i was about twelve. i feel somewhat satisfied. i knew that pluto didn't fit the pattern set by the major bodies in the solar system so it was an anomaly. it just felt illogical and "out of place". this was the right thing to do, believe me. i don't understand why so many are having such a problem with this.
i don't know how long this will drag on tho. many planetary scientists are not satisfied that the definition is rigorous enough.

nothing is ultimate in this world and everything is subject to change including demotion or promotion of Pluto. Why should you explore other planets with their atmosphere and temperature and availability of water, for no reasons? because with changes in them, they can be exploited at a later date, if not now. Hence change should be welcome provided it had been assessed correctly.

My question is, how did the ancient Greek Gods feel when mickey mouse named his dog? Or when TSR started using all their names in a vain attempt at a role playing game?

It is now a protected class and cannot be spoken harshly about without possible prosecution from the law. You also cannot deny Pluto a job.

Who really gives a poop is what I want to know. It is so ridiculous to me that they kept putting this in the headlines, like it really matters. Call it what ever you want. Classify it however you like. It hasn't changed at all, and it's still out there. Sometimes smart people can be really, really stupid.
